Combination locks make use of number and symbols to protect your valuables. They do not use a key like other types of locks. An arrangement of numbers or symbols are entered into the locking mechanism through the use of a single rotating dial or several rotating discs. These discs or dials will act on the internal mechanism of the lock. After the correct sequence of numbers or symbols is entered, the lock will open.
There are several types of combination locks available today. These are:
Multiple-dial locks
The multiple-dial lock is at the bottom of the security scale in regards to lock security. They are mostly used in low-security situations, for example to lock a bike. They are built using a number of rotating discs with notches cut unto them. A single pin is used to secure the lock. When the discs are rotated and the notches align with the teeth on the pin, it opens.
Opening a multiple-dial lock without the combination is relatively easy. Due to the irregularities in the production of the different parts, you can just pull the pin outwards while rotating the discs on the lock. Continue rotating each individual disc until a slight click is heard. This sound indicates that the teeth have matched the disk notch. Repeat this process on all remaining discs until the lock is open. This is a very easy process, requiring simply a bit of patience.
Single-dial locks
Single-dial locks are a notch above in safety compared to the Multiple-dial locks. Due to their safety, you will find these locks on most safes or padlocks. Their mechanism consists of a rotating dial. To open them, you dial the first number clockwise, the second number counterclockwise, and so on. After dialing the last number in the combination sequence, all the notches will be aligned and the lock will open.
Modern Single-dial locks are much safer, but their early predecessors were not. For example, early production Master locks could be opened by simply pulling the lock shackle while turning the dial until it stopped. By doing this, you could guess the combination easily and with minor effort.
Electronic locks
Some of the newer combination locks utilize electronic circuitry instead of mechanical tumblers to secure your valuables . These electronic marvels require you to enter a number combination on a keypad. If the sequence of number is the correct one, the lock opens.
A benefit of these locks is that a key is no longer required. You only need to remember a numeric combination. One single weakness on these locks is that if the combination number is lost, a new one must be programmed to ensure security.
